From Scratch is New Zealand’s best known art/music ensemble. Formed in 1974, they have taken their music to the world along with their egalitarian politics and engagement with the sounds and environmental rhythms of the Pacific. The 555 Moons exhibition at City Gallery tells the From Scratch story with films of performances, instruments and sonic sculptures, documents, drawings, and photos.

From Scratch lead a day-long improv in collaboration with a travelling roster of local guest musicians including Bridget Kelly, Gareth Farr and Jo Hilder, Johny Marks, Tom Callwood and Antonia Barnett-McIntosh. Drop in or stay for the day to experience their sonic playfulness.
Heart’Heart’Heart, Sat 9 Mar, 8pm, Charged entry
From Scratch explore City Gallery’s multiple sonic spaces, performing early and new rhythm works on invented instruments. Come witness a mesmerising performance that is part sculpture, part music, part ritual.
