NGĀ WHAKAPAPARANGA: Songs of Aotearoa
RadioActive.FM are pleased to announce the first of an ongoing series of cover compilations, ‘NGĀ WHAKAPAPARANGA: Songs of Aotearoa’.
We invited some of our favourite Wellington acts into the Orcon live room throughout NZ Music Month, to record their take on an iconic New Zealand song in only 3 takes or less. The results have been spectacular, with each artist creating their own fascinating interpretation of their favorite kiwi track. Each cover pays homage to artists we & the rest of New Zealand hold so dear to our hearts: featuring absolute icon Caroline Easther, indie wonders Same Name Confusion, dub-soul sister act Dr. Reknaw, sonic explorers Transistor, hip-hop favourites Raw Collective, local legends WOMB, pop princess Hybrid Rose, mustachioed-muso Finn Johansson & the sax-dipped tones of Melting Faces.
“Whakapaparanga, when translated literally, means ‘layer’, ‘series of layers’, ‘generation’ or ‘story’. Our compilation tells the layered stories of our musical hapori; celebrating not only those wonderful artists currently taking Aotearoa by storm, but the artists that paved that way for them. Our compilation is a retrospect for the future; Aotearoa’s most iconic waiata of the latter 20th century, made fresh by some of our country’s current greats”
