NZSO presents Shakespeare in Music

Type: Orchestral
Venue: Michael Fowler Centre
Date: Saturday, 2nd of Aug, 2014
Time: 7:30pm
Price: Tickets from Ticketek.co.nz. Marking his 450th birthday, we celebrate musical works inspired by Shakespeare’s genius.
Summary: 'The man that hath no music in himself / Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds / Is fit for treasons'

With this in mind, and marking his 450th birthday, we celebrate musical works that have been inspired by Shakespeare’s genius. Korngold’s Much Ado About Nothing Suite is a perfect demonstration of the lush melodies that made him such a popular film composer. And it was for a film version of Henry V that Walton composed his regal and resplendent score, while Mendelssohn’s incidental music for A Midsummer Night’s Dream overflows with musical magic. Balancing these iridescent works is Strauss’s symphonic poem Macbeth. A declaration of his faith in modernism, the work is unashamedly dramatic. Led by the supreme musicianship of British conductor Alexander Shelley, this concert brings the Bard to life in a ‘concord of sweet sounds’.

Second Afterlife

Type: Theatre
Venue: Bats Out of Site (Corner of Cuba & Dixon Street)
Date: Friday, 18th of Jul, 2014
Time: 8:00pm
Price: $18.00, Concession $14.00, Group 6+ $13.00.
Season finishes: Saturday, 2nd of Aug, 2014
Summary: Dan has done it all – Facebook, Bebo, Warcraft, that unfortunate foray on NZDating. Profiles, used and deleted. Now he’s ready to reinvent himself. It’s time for a new profile.

However, there’s a hitch.

In order to forge a new identity, Dan has to face up to his internet history: the Bebo emo, Warcraft gamer, and NZDating casanova. They’re cooler, savvier, and shot from more flattering angles. And they’re not going down without a fight.

Second Afterlife is a dark comedy about life (and death) in the digital age. Inspired by Dante’s Inferno, and in the tradition of Scott Pilgrim vs the World, it is a twisted allegory for the Facebook generation – a poetic, ass-kicking romp to the darkest corners of web.

Orchestra Wellington presents: Song of the Nightingale

Type: Orchestral
Venue: Michael Fowler Centre
Date: Saturday, 9th o Aug, 2014
Time: 7:30pm
Price: Tix from Ticketek.co.nz. The kind of beautiful full plumage that only master composers and a symphony orchestra can provide.
Season Starts: Saturday, 9th o Aug, 2014
Season finishes: Wednesday, 27th o Aug, 2014
Summary: Haydn’s ‘Hen’ symphony carries more drama and mystery than its title might suggest. Rimsky-Korsakov’s fantastic score for The Golden Cockerel shares Stravinsky’s ability to evoke magic, and reveals a Russian bent for satire. Stravinsky adapted his symphonic poem The Song of the Nightingale from his first opera, based on a fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen. Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G sparkles and struts, with more than a hint of jazz swagger.
